Spa-pool systems are increasingly popular and are great to use. But all spas and hot tubs pose a reasonably foreseeable risk as they are a recognised source of diseases caused by infectious agents including the organism that causes Legionnaires’ Disease.
There have been a number of outbreaks linked to spa-pool systems in leisure centres, hotels, holiday homes, on cruise ships and in store displays.
Several incidents are reported every year. For example, a hotel swimming pool and spa at Sandown, Isle of Wight, were closed by Environmental Health officials in February, 2020, following the discovery of high levels of legionella bacteria.
In such a case the reputational damage to a business can have serious consequences.
